It’s no surprise – 3D printers have continued to astonish people of all ages from all over the world. This magical printer can create little knick-knacks,figurines, and even actual food, all thanks to the art of science and engineering. What’s next for these printers? A company located in Boston by the name of Ministry of Supply released a bombshell on the fashion world – a completely seamless jacket that was made with a 3D printer. This dapper men’s suit jacket is still under modification, seeing that the suit jacket was made to adorn the upper half of a mannequin and not an actual male, yet that issue could easily be fixed by a little TLC from a trusted tailor.
But what does this new technology mean for the fashion industry? What does it mean for consumers?
Gihan Amarasiriwardena, co-founder and chief design officer of Ministry of Supply, goes on to explain that this could lead to an era where a consumer could just walk into a store, tell the designer what he/she would like to have done, and the designer could literally print out the piece of clothing that the consumer requested. All that would need to be done would be for the consumer to give his or her measurements to ensure that the article of clothing would fit to their unique frame.
Not only is this just extremely cool, but this new way of creating clothing also claims to be eco-friendly. The traditional cut-and-sew method of creating clothing is said to waste up to 30% of the fabric. 3D printing clothing would shrink that number to zero.
It also would cut down on time. To sketch out a drawing of an article of clothing, and then cut the fabric and sew it strategically back together again could take days, weeks, sometimes even months. This jacket that Ministry of Supply creates is made in less than 2 hours, while providing added thickness in places where it’s needed and a little less fabric in areas where sweat might tend to accumulate.
The entire idea behind making clothing via 3D printing is so that clothing can be tailored for the buyer’s frame,and let’s be honest, that is the dream. Human beings want to look good, and the one of the first things that catches a stranger’s eye is the clothing you decide to decorate your body with. Why not make it a perfect fit?
